Goretzky's Two-Goal Performance Powers St. Vital to Snap Winless Streak
St. Vital’s Ryland Nechwediuk made a triumphant return to the lineup, notching a stellar five-point night to lead the Victorias to a convincing 6-2 victory over the River East Royal Knights. Missing four games prior, Nechwediuk’s impact was immediate and invaluable, as his goal and four assists energized a team looking to snap a five-game winless stretch. His performance not only bolstered the scoreboard but injected the Victorias with much-needed cohesion and offensive depth.
Blake Goretzky also made his mark, adding two goals and showcasing his scoring touch. Goretzky’s first tally came on the power play late in the first period, while his second goal extended the Victorias’ lead in the second period. Tyler Rubigny, the October MMJHL Forward of the Month, contributed a solid outing as well, logging a goal and an assist, while Michael Spence and Connor Mitchell each added a goal to round out St. Vital’s offense. Despite missing forward Aidan Anderson for the third consecutive game, the Victorias’ forward lines showed determination and resilience.
In goal, Mason Tabak delivered a stellar performance, stopping 29 of 31 shots and holding off the Royal Knights. River East’s goals both came via the power play, a notable feat considering their modest ninth-place ranking in league power play effectiveness. Antoine Mckay led the way for River East with a goal and an assist, showcasing his skill even in a difficult game for the team. Despite these efforts, River East’s goaltender Manny Minuk Jr. struggled against the Victorias’ attack, with the six-goal tally reflecting a rough night between the pipes. The Royal Knights have now lost three games in a row and look to regroup against the Railer Express on Saturday. The season series between the Victorias and the Royal Knights is now tied at one game apiece; they will face off against one another next on Sunday, December 1st, at River East.
St. Vital’s penalty kill, however, remains a clear area for improvement. Ranked last in the league, the Victorias’ PK unit allowed both River East goals, highlighting a critical aspect of their game they must shore up if they’re to maintain momentum and climb the standings. Nonetheless, with a dynamic player like Nechwediuk back in action, St. Vital looks ready to redefine their season and continue building on this much-needed victory.
